043 - Exploring the Southwest - Coronado Expedition of 1540 Led by a Southeast Arizona National Parks Ranger
Travel back to the mid-16th century and follow the dramatic journey of the Coronado Expedition, the first major Spanish exploration of the American Southwest. In this program, we’ll explore the world Francisco Vázquez de Coronado came from, why this ambitious expedition set out in search of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold, and the complex logistics behind moving hundreds of people, livestock, and supplies across unfamiliar landscapes. We’ll take a close look at the pivotal (and often tense) encounters between the expedition and the Indigenous communities they met and conclude by examining how the Columbian Exchange transformed daily life on both sides of the Atlantic, with effects still felt today. This program is ideal for lifelong learners who enjoy weaving together history, culture, and the human stories behind major events.   (Class limit:  50)
