081 - Paradiplomacy: How Ordinary Cities Sustain International Diplomacy
When national governments retreat from international engagement, who steps in? For over two decades, Grand Junction and El Espino, El Salvador, have sustained a sister-city relationship that offers a striking answer. This class shares preliminary findings from an ongoing study of "paradiplomacy," the way everyday civic ties, student exchanges, and community relationships can carry on the work of diplomacy even when formal politics falter. A CMU student researcher who traveled to El Salvador this summer with Dr. Holly Oberle will join her to share firsthand reflections from the field.   (Class limit:  50)
