054 - The Gilded Age of Chicago
Chicago’s Gilded Age was a period of explosive industrial growth, architectural innovation, and immense wealth following the devastation of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Join us in learning about Chicago’s Millionaires Row & The Gold Coast: Learn about wealthy magnates who first built grand estates on Prairie Avenue on the South Side (known as Millionaires Row) before shifting north to the Gold Coast along Lake Shore Drive. Learn about Industrial Titans: self-made industrialists—such as retail giant Marshall Field, meatpacker Philip Armor, Pullman car creator George Pullman, and reaper manufacturer Cyrus McCormick. We will touch lightly on the Haymarket affair and the Pullman strike, altering social and labor strife in this country.   (Class limit:  50)
