070 - Machines that Reveal the Fundamental Nature of Reality: World-Class Astronomical Observing Sites on Earth

In this continuing lecture series, we’ll explore why the world’s premier observatories are located in Chile, Hawaii, and the Canary Islands – and what their land-based telescopes are revealing about the history and evolution of our universe and solar system. The class will also take you on a tour of the observatories based on recent visits to these three locations, explaining how they are operated, what astronomers are researching, and how they are collaborating across continents. In addition to their unique observing characteristics, each location is also shaped by the surrounding land, legal frameworks, cultural traditions, and the communities that call these places home – factors that both influence and are influenced by the pursuit of scientific discovery.
