084 - Portraits of George Washington

In connection with the 250th anniversary of the USA, it is appropriate to look at the images of the nation’s first Commander-In-Chief and first President. We will look at the portraits produced during his lifetime, especially those made when he was alive, nearly all of them paintings. We will also look at paintings, prints, and sculptures produced after his death, especially during the next half-century, which are often remarkably different. These images reveal much about the nation’s early history and changing ideology. (Class limit: 80)
