095 - Soundscapes - Considering Sound in Poetry

In writing, sound is more than just using sound words, like whisper or clang. Sound is the actual letters themselves and the sounds they make. Consider what a garden sounds like – long and short I’s, soft S’s and H’s, perhaps? Using Hyacinth or Narcissus, rather than flowers, gives the feeling of a quiet morning in the garden. Choosing the right words based on sound can add subtle layers of meaning, tone, and texture to our writing. Beginners are welcome, no need to have prior knowledge of poetic form, meter, etc.

The first session focuses on soundscapes and how they contribute to the overall tone of a writer’s work. We begin with mindful listening to enhance creativity. We will conduct a three-part exercise designed to create a good first draft.

In the second session, we will consider the overall soundscape of poems, using alliteration, assonance, and consonance as tools to enhance a final product. We will discuss successful workshopping practices. Time is included for workshopping our poems with peers.

The third session focuses on fine tuning our poems and presenting them to one another. Poets will be presented with a packet of material to encourage future writing. (Class limit: 24)
